Valemount Museum & Archives

Arts-Education-Shopping

The Valemount Museum and Archives is operated by the Valemount Historic Society, a non-profit and registered charity. The organization is supported by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, Village of Valemount, and BC Gaming. The Society was incorporated in 1981.

The Valemount Museum has something for every member of the family. It has three levels in the main building with displays on the railway, a model rail road that even runs through the bathroom, Japanese internment camps, war heroes, old children’s toys, Valemount pioneers, Margaret McKirdy’s little people, James Vanslyk’s art, Valemount schools, sewing, an old bedroom, pioneer kitchen, early settlers, outfitting and an exciting trapper’s cabin. There is a gift shop and a unique children’s program every Thursday, with various fundraising events throughout the year.

Meet The Valemount Historical Society

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” That quote from Marcus Garvey serves as a reminder for the Valemount Museum and Archives to share interesting stories about the area so people can learn how the community came to be.

The museum launched in 1992 after the Valemount Historic Society purchased the existing train station in 1987, moved it, and restored it over the next five years. The original train station was built in 1914, so the museum itself is an interesting historical artifact, in addition to other historical artifacts that are housed in the train station, annex and restored caboose.
